Velour Magazine Anniversary Cover Story
September 2011
Velour magazine, established by photographer Eddie Bovingdon, celebrated its first anniversary last month with a wonderful cover story featuring David Gandy, arguably the most successful male model in the world. The magazine was created when Eddie recognised the need to re-dress the balance of current fashion magazines by showcasing fashion design flair and inspirational photography talent rather than pure fashion sales.
The story for the anniversary issue was always intended to be dark and moody with the images provoking thoughts of movie stills rather than a straight forward stills shoot. Direct Photographic’s MD, Steve Knight, a long-term supporter of Eddie’s work, recce’d the location (a disused warehouse in Limehouse, East London) with Eddie and decided on the kit required to produce the look Eddie wanted to create. To help with the cinematic feel it was decided to bring out the big lights - an 18kw HMI together with a compliment of smaller HMI’s and lighting grip kit. The location was lacking any sort of reliable power supply therefore Direct Photographic supplied a generator truck and operator as the sole power source for the shoot, it was able to provide power for the lighting as well as hair & make up, styling and catering. A smoke machine was used to help create the atmospheric look and feel.
It was a long but a successful day.
